Driving rules, speed limits and fines in Thailand

Thailand drives on the left. This guide covers the rules that decide most fines and most accidents: speed limits, alcohol, seat belts and helmets, who has priority, and the 12-point licence system.

The basics

  • Drive on the left. Keep to the left lane unless overtaking, turning or driving faster than the traffic on your left.
  • Overtake on the right, never on the left unless the vehicle ahead is turning right or the road has two or more lanes your way.
  • Seat belts for the driver and all passengers, including the back seat (since the 2022 amendment).
  • Child restraint for children under 6. The start date is disputed, see below.
  • Helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers.
  • Phone only hands-free, never in your hand.
  • Headlights on when you cannot see clearly beyond about 150 metres.
  • Signal at least 60 metres before turning, changing lanes or stopping.

What sources report: When the child-seat rule started

  • September 2022, with enforcement postponed for up to 90 days. Thai PBS World and the 2022 reports
  • 17 August 2023. Another guide

Speed limits

The limits below come from the 2021 ministerial regulations. Posted signs always override them. On roads without a posted limit, the category limits apply.

VehicleBangkok, Pattaya, municipal and built-up areasDivided highways, 4+ lanes
Cars (under 7 seats) and similar80 km/h120 km/h (minimum 100 km/h in the rightmost lane)
Motorcycles60 km/h80 km/h
Big bikes (400 cc and more)80 km/h110 km/h
Trucks over 2,200 kg60 km/h90 km/h
Buses over 15 seatssee the signs90 km/h

The 120 km/h applies to designated, divided stretches without junctions or U-turns at road level. Elsewhere, assume 90 km/h and obey the signs.

Alcohol

  • 50 mg% (50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood) for ordinary drivers.
  • 20 mg% for drivers under 20, holders of a temporary licence, and anyone driving without a valid licence for that vehicle.
  • Penalty: a fine of 5,000–20,000 THB and/or up to one year in prison, and a licence suspension of at least six months. If you cause injury or death the penalties rise sharply.
  • Refusing to be tested is an offence in itself (a fine of up to 1,000 THB under the Act), and the officer can hold you for the time needed to examine you.

What sources report: Do drivers licensed for under five years also fall under 20 mg%?

  • Yes. Several sites
  • No: that wording is not in the regulation, which covers drivers under 20, temporary licence holders and unlicensed drivers. One legal guide

Fines: what the numbers really mean

You will see lists of fines that look very high. They are usually the statutory maximums, quadrupled by the 2022 amendment. The amount on a roadside ticket is set separately and is normally lower, but you can be taken to court for the full amount.

OffenceMaximum (THB)Other
Speedingup to 4,0001 point
Running a red lightup to 4,0002 points

Reckless driving5,000–20,000and/or up to one year in prison

These are the maximums announced in the April 2026 enforcement campaign (The Thaiger). We found no reliable parking figure.

What sources report: The helmet fine

  • Up to 2,000 THB. The Thaiger, April 2026, after the 2022 amendment quadrupled ceilings
  • Up to 500 THB (and double for the rider if the passenger has none). The English translation of the Land Traffic Act, section 122, before the amendment

The 12-point licence system

Since January 2023, every licence starts with 12 points.

Points lostExamples
1Speeding, no helmet, phone in hand, no seat belt, not stopping for pedestrians, unpaid fines
2Running a red light, driving on the wrong side
3–4Hit and run, drink or drug driving, street racing
  • Lose all 12 points and your licence is suspended for 90 days.
  • Points come back automatically a year after the offence, and you can recover some by attending a training course.
  • Driving while suspended is a separate offence, with a prison term of up to three months.
  • You can check your balance on the police e-ticket website or the Khub Dee app.

Point values and the foreign-licence position come from news reports from 2022 and 2023. Check the current table before you rely on it.

Junctions, roundabouts and priority

  • At a junction with no signs or lights, if two vehicles arrive together the vehicle on the left goes first, unless one of the roads is a designated main road.
  • Vehicles already in the junction go first.
  • At a roundabout with no signs or signals, give way to vehicles coming from your right.
  • Turning right: let oncoming vehicles pass first. Vehicles turning left give way to vehicles turning right.
  • Emergency vehicles with lights or siren: pull over to the left and never stop inside a junction.
  • School buses picking up or dropping off: slow down and pass with great care.

Also never on a bridge or in a tunnel, on a footpath, double parked, or where a sign or red-and-white kerb says no. Parked vehicles must be within 25 cm of the kerb.

Frequently asked questions

Which side of the road do you drive on in Thailand?

On the left. Overtake on the right, and keep to the left lane unless you are overtaking or turning.

What is the speed limit in Bangkok?

For cars the limit in Bangkok, Pattaya and municipal areas is 80 km/h. It is 60 km/h for motorcycles and for trucks over 2,200 kg. Posted signs always override these figures.

What is the drink-driving limit in Thailand?

50 mg% (50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood) for ordinary drivers, and 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and temporary-licence holders. The penalty is a fine of 5,000 to 20,000 THB and/or up to a year in prison, plus a licence suspension.

How many points does a Thai driving licence have?

12. Speeding, not wearing a helmet or seat belt and phone use cost 1 point each, running a red light costs 2, and drink driving up to 4. Losing all 12 suspends your licence for 90 days.

Do I have to pay a fine on the spot?

Not necessarily. The officer can give you a written order to report at a police station, and under the Act you can pay by sending a money order with a copy of that order. A temporary replacement for a seized licence is valid for up to seven days. Always ask for the ticket and keep it.
