The Thai driving theory test: format, pass mark and sample questions

The theory test is a 50-question multiple-choice exam on a computer, and you need 45 correct (90%) to pass. It is available in English at most offices. Here is what it covers, how to prepare, and twelve sample questions.

Who has to take it

  • New applicants (no licence, expired licence, provisional licence): yes.
  • Converting a foreign licence: officially the DLT says holders of a valid foreign licence or IDP can request an exemption from the theory and driving exams. In practice many offices, Bangkok in particular, now ask every foreign applicant to sit the theory test, and a draft national rule would make it universal.
  • Renewing: no theory test for a normal renewal. See how to renew.
  • Motorcycles: yes, plus a handling test. See the motorcycle licence guide.

What sources report: Is it required when you convert a foreign licence?

  • Can be exempted. DLT information quoted by Lead Stories, Jan 2025
  • Mandatory for all foreign applicants since the 2025 rules. The Thaiger, Nov 2025
  • Required; only the practical test may be waived. The Thailand Life, May 2026
  • Not required for a conversion. Chiang Mai Visa Run, an agency page

The sensible plan: assume you will sit it.

Safe driving

How to prepare, in a week

  1. Learn the numbers

Distances and speeds are the most testable facts: 30 m for overtaking near junctions, 10 m for junction parking, 25 cm from the kerb, 5 m from railway tracks, 60 m for signals, 50 mg% for alcohol.

  2. Learn the signs by shape and colour

Once you know the system you can read signs you have never seen. Our signs guide shows every one.

  3. Practise in English

The English wording can be awkward. Do a few full 50-question mock exams so the style stops surprising you.

  4. Review what you miss

Re-do the questions you got wrong. That is where the points are.

  5. Take a mock exam the day before

If you score 45 or more twice, you are ready.

The mistakes people make

  • Priority at an uncontrolled junction. In Thailand the vehicle on the left goes first, the opposite of what many Europeans and Americans expect.
  • Roundabouts. You give way to traffic coming from your right, and drive around clockwise.
  • Mixing up the distances. 3 m, 10 m, 15 m and 30 m all appear. Learn which goes with what.
  • The mandatory-versus-prohibitory colours. Blue is "do this". Red border is "do not".
  • Assuming a flashing red is optional. It means stop, then proceed with care.
