Which visa do you need for a Thai driving licence?
The visa is the first thing a DLT office looks at, and the rule is not applied the same everywhere. A non-immigrant visa is the safe bet. Everything else depends on the office.
This is one step of the main guide: how to get a Thai driving licence as a foreigner.
Why the visa matters
To convert a foreign licence or take the tests, the DLT wants to see that you live in Thailand, not that you are passing through. The visa in your passport is the first evidence, and the certificate of residence is the second. The Thai government states that visitors with a valid IDP may drive, so the licence is aimed at residents.
There is no single English checklist from the DLT, and each office applies its own reading. That is why the sources below disagree.
Non-immigrant visas: the safe bet
A non-immigrant visa is the one every source treats as acceptable: business (B), marriage or family (O), education (ED), retirement and other long-stay visas. With one of these, the rest of the process is the usual paperwork. Some offices also look at how long the visa is valid when they decide between a 2-year and a 5-year licence.
Tourist visa
This is the case with the most disagreement. The DLT does not publish a rule, and reports range from "refused" to "accepted with proof of address".
What sources report: Is a tourist visa accepted?
- Generally not accepted, "highly problematic", depends on officer discretion. The Thaiger, Nov 2025
- Often not accepted at DLT offices; a non-tourist visa is expected. The Thailand Life, May 2026
- Some branches issue the licence to long tourist stays with address proof; others require a non-immigrant visa. Foreigners Thailand, Aug 2026
- Non-tourist visa required (ED, Non-O, Non-B, DTV and similar). Chiang Mai Visa Run, an agency page
If you are on a tourist visa, do not buy the certificates yet. Phone the office you plan to use and ask.
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
Some guides list the DTV among the visas offices accept, and a forum thread from a DTV holder in Bangkok lists the TM.30, the certificate of residence and the home licence as the documents used. We found no official statement, and the thread is a question, not a confirmed process. If you hold a DTV, ask the office before you start.
What to do first
Check the visa type and expiry in your passport
Note the type and how many months are left.
Phone or visit the office
Ask whether it accepts your visa and whether you can apply as a walk-in. See the offices foreigners use.
Only then collect the 30-day documents
The medical certificate and the certificate of residence both expire.
Keep a plan B
If one office refuses, a different office may accept. Stay polite and do not argue.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Thai driving licence on a tourist visa?
Often not. Most guides say tourist visas are generally refused, a few offices accept long stays with proof of address, and it can depend on the officer. Call the office before spending money.
Which visa is best for converting my licence?
A non-immigrant visa, such as B, O, ED or a retirement visa. It is the one every source treats as acceptable.
Does the DTV work for a Thai driving licence?
Some guides say so, but we found no official confirmation. Ask the office you plan to use.
Does the length of my visa affect the licence?
Sometimes. Some reports say a strong, long-valid visa helps with the 5-year licence, while a short one can mean the 2-year licence. It differs by office.
