The DLT e-learning course for a Thai licence
An e-learning training certificate is on the DLT's list of documents for converting a licence. How long the course is, and whether you do it online first or at the office, varies.
This is one step of the main guide: how to get a Thai driving licence as a foreigner.
What it is
A short training the DLT asks applicants to complete before the tests. An "E-Learning Training Certificate" is on the DLT's required list for converting a foreign licence. You need the certificate, not just to have watched the material.
The training exists because the DLT lengthened its course in 2018, from four hours to five, and moved part of it to partner institutes that issue the certificate.
How long it takes
What sources report: Course length and exemptions
- 5 hours for non-citizens, or 1 hour if exempt because you hold a foreign licence. DLT information reported in January 2025
- 1 hour for motorcycle licences, and 5 hours otherwise. Thailand Starter Kit
- About 2 hours for cars and 1 hour for motorcycles in the renewal version. a renewal guide
Plan for up to five hours and treat a shorter course as a bonus.
Online beforehand, or at the office?
Some offices let you complete the course online before your appointment through the DLT e-learning system. Others run a video on the day. A DLT-certified private driving school can also give you the course in English with a certificate.
One report says the e-learning video is required for both new applicants and conversions. Another says it depends on the province and that at least one province does not ask for it. When you book, ask the office which version it expects.
What to bring
- Your passport, to register for the course.
- An email address and a device with a stable connection, if you do it online.
- The printed or saved certificate. Bring a copy and keep the file on your phone.
The certificate does not have the 30-day limit of the medical certificate, but check with the office how recent it must be.
